There are a few things that you can count on in Hollywood: That the sequel will (almost) always be worse, Tom Hanks will always be charming, and Jennifer Coolidge will always be Jennifer Coolidge. The latter proved this maxim to be gloriously true at the 2022 Emmy Awards on Monday night, when she got up to accept the outstanding supporting actress award for her role as Tanya McQuoid on The White Lotus and delivered a speech that was about as memorable as you’d expect it to be:

True to form, it was hard to tell whether Coolidge was doing a bit or being 100% sincere; she kept talking past the point where her “play-off music” (widely known to signal to awards-show honorees that it’s time to scoot offstage) started, and exclaimed at one point, “This is a once-in-a-lifetime thing, and I’m full! I’m full!” (Okay, the “full” part was a reference to an actual bit from earlier in her acceptance speech, but it was still charming as hell.)
Just when Coolidge’s consternation about not being able to finish her list of thank-yous shifted from “funny” to “is she okay??” she gave a little shimmy, easily reassuring the audience that everything was fine. Was the whole thing planned, or is that just how Jennifer Coolidge organically accepts an Emmy? We may never know.
