It was an image the world hasn’t seen in some time: Prince William, Kate Middleton, Prince Harry, and Meghan Markle, all making a public appearance together. The occasion? Collecting flowers from the public outside of Windsor Castle, in wake of Queen Elizabeth’s passing on September 8. Thousands cheered as the quartet made their way down the Long Walk, pausing to read the tributes the public had left outside of the gates. Each couple also collected flowers and talked to members of their crowd who had gathered to express their condolences.

He also evoked one of his grandmother’s most memorable sayings, which she shared with the American public following September 11: “My grandmother said that grief was the price we pay for love. All of the sadness we will feel in the coming weeks will be a testament to the love we felt for our extraordinary Queen.”

The Sussexes will remain in the United Kingdom for the next several days, as the country undergoes a period of mourning for Queen Elizabeth ahead of her funeral, which will take place on September 19.
